Can you help reconcile my first/second-hand LLM Experience with HN's Experience?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48102861I've made an account as a long-time lurker because I am hoping y'all could help reconcile my experience in my company/team with what seems to be the wise HN consensus around LLMs.My Background (Software Engineer II):I've been writing software professionally for >10 years and grew up coding games/websites for fun; did my undergraduate in C.S./C.E., and did some time in ML research and such. Right now I'm on the back-end/DevOps team - my teammates are all Senior Staff/Principal Engineer (one is almost double my age lol!) and we have a pretty standard tech stack (NodeJS, AWS, C++, etc) with 95% brownfield development at a large but not FAANG-like company. I've had my current job for >6 years and out of ~20 in our department I'm the third newest!I'd say I'm a pretty stereotypical engineer AKA "a total nerd" with private side projects mostly around implementing computational geometry or procedural simulation papers in Rust, sometimes working on a lil website tool we use daily. But I mostly

NASA Volunteers Double Known Population of Brown Dwarfshttps://science.nasa.gov/get-involved/citizen-science/nasa-volunteers-double-known-population-of-brown-dwarfs/A new paper from NASA’s Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 project announces that volunteers have essentially doubled the number of known brown dwarfs, with over 3,000 new discoveries made over the past 10 years since the project began. Brown dwarfs are balls of gas the size of Jupiter, less massive than stars. There’s one for every three or four stars near the Sun.

NASA Connects Little Red Dots with Chandra, Webbhttps://science.nasa.gov/missions/chandra/nasa-connects-little-red-dots-with-chandra-webb/A newly discovered object may be a key to unlocking the true nature of a mysterious class of sources that astronomers have found in the early universe in recent years. A “X-ray dot” found by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory could explain what the hundreds or potentially thousands of these objects are. A paper describing the […]

NASA Finds Young Stars Dim in X-rays Surprisingly Quicklyhttps://science.nasa.gov/missions/chandra/nasa-finds-young-stars-dim-in-x-rays-surprisingly-quickly/Scientists have found that young stellar cousins of our Sun are calming down and dimming more quickly in their X-ray output than previously thought, according to a new study using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. A paper describing the results published Monday in The Astrophysical Journal. Unlike in the new movie “Project Hail Mary,” this quieting […]

Show HN: Memv – Memory for AI Agentshttps://github.com/vstorm-co/memvmemv is an open-source Python library that gives AI agents persistent memory. Feed it conversations; it extracts knowledge. The extraction mechanism is predict-calibrate (Nemori paper): given existing knowledge, it predicts what a new conversation should contain, then extracts only what the prediction missed.v0.1.2 adds the production path: - PostgreSQL backend (pgvector for vectors, tsvector for text search, asyncpg pooling). Single db_url parameter — file path for SQLite, connection string for Postgres. - Embedding adapters: OpenAI, Voyage, Cohere, fastembed (local ONNX).Other things it does: - Bi-temporal validity: event time (when was the fact true) + transaction time (when did we learn it), following Graphiti's model. - Hybrid retrieval: vector similarity + BM25 merged with Reciprocal Rank Fusion. - Episode segmentation: groups messages before extraction. - Contradiction handling: new facts invalidate old ones, with full audit trail.Procedural memory (agents learning from past runs

Show HN: Investing Withous Bias or Emotionhttps://github.com/kachurovskiy/stratcraft/I've spent years actively trading and losing money. It affected my health and relationships negatively. I also realized that my opinion on what's worth buying is more than worthless, what matters is the opinion of the market. But I didn't want to settle for index funds that hold a lot of under-performing stocks so I've built this tool that allows trading 12000 instruments (stocks, ETFs, metals, real estate, crypto) via statistically proven strategies.Project is open source, tool is self-hosted, at the very minimum it requires an Alpaca brokerage account, they also provide the necessary market data, alternatively you can use Tiingo or EODHD.I'm currently running 2 paper trading accounts, fine-tuning parameters like slippage, planning to start ADX on real money soon.I'm not trying to beat hedge funds and other big players here, instead I'm looking to join them by waiting for a trend to be established (daily time frame, wide stops, long duration trades) and naturally diversifying over all

NASA Discovers Crash of Extreme Stars in Unexpected Sitehttps://www.nasa.gov/missions/chandra/nasa-discovers-crash-of-extreme-stars-in-unexpected-site/A fleet of NASA missions has likely uncovered a collision between two ultradense stars in a tiny galaxy buried in a huge stream of gas. Astronomers have never seen this type of explosive event in an environment like this before — and it may help solve two outstanding cosmic mysteries. A paper describing these results […]
