Show HN: Web Digest – Collection of (daily) big stories on the webhttps://webdigest.pages.dev/I hate browsing news apps and news websites. It is a time-consuming, energy-draining, and information-overloading experience. There are endless articles to read if one is to read something. The journalism industry, including the UGC aspect of it, produces contents significantly more than what an ordinary human can process (or even decide which to process). However, I do find the fear of missing out a real problem which should be addressed, or even solved, and solving it with an illusion of not missing out is good enough. One has to be very selective in reading, otherwise one would be drown in the flood of information. I find it necessary to limit the size of readable contents and repel the creators/editors/platforms who tempt me to read more and more endlessly. Being long is not a problem for me, but having an unknown length is.Hence this project was brought forth onto this world. I have written scripts to automate the production of Web Digest artifacts in PDF/HTML/MD at 00:01 UTC every

Launch HN: IcePanel (YC W23) – Onboard engineers with explorable system designshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34338995Hey HN, Victor and Jacob here. We’re excited to show you what we’ve been building over the last couple of years! IcePanel (https://icepanel.io) helps architects and developers easily explain how their software works with interactive and explorable diagrams.Modern systems are complicated, and getting new developers up to speed and contributing fully is time-consuming and difficult. It costs the new developer's time, as well as the time of the senior first/second generation developers who help them constantly through their first 6 months. The resources people use to learn new systems are usually scattered across a maze of artefacts, like confluence pages or outdated draw.io diagrams, which are usually incomplete, with the ‘real’ understanding of the system being tribal knowledge in the team. As discussed in yesterday’s post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34328069 “documentation only works up to a point” and we believe this is due to docs being disconnected from the code. A map of y

Why Startups Are Fun, Not Hardhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34229683Since I quit my job to start a company, I get asked "how is it like to build a company?" and my reply is always "like being on the playground!" To which I always receive the following reply: "Yeah, but it must be hard!"I don't get it. Honestly I never did. Why the emphasis on hard? and why "hard" is a bad thing?Ever been to a playground? A hot mess of challenges and all those kids think it's fun, because that's their idea of fun.Imagine being a 2 year old here. The older kids around you navigate the tangled web of obstacles effortlessly, while you still struggle balancing your feet on the rope. An older kid got impatient with your slow progress and stepped on the rope to head to the other side. Now you lose your balance and fall down. You want to cry. You might do, and 2 mins later you try again. It is not the first time that you try to walk on the rope from here to the other side. You spent the last 30 mins trying, the last day too. You cannot remember when was the first time you tried

UK house prices set to plummet by 60%https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33921024The UK government has flat out refused to get involved in the private mortgage markets, despite calls from housing experts and economists to intervene in the face of the predicted downturn in house prices.According to a report by the UK Housing Association, house prices in certain areas of the country are predicted to drop by as much as 60% in 2023, with the South and North West set to be hit the hardest. The report has sparked concerns that the middle classes, in particular, will be hit hard by the downturn, with many facing negative equity as a result of the falling prices. However, despite these concerns, the government has stated that it has no plans to intervene in the private mortgage markets. In a statement, a spokesperson for the government said: "We believe that the private mortgage market should be allowed to operate freely and without interference from the government. Intervention would only serve to distort the market and could have unintended consequences for both homeowner

Show HN: Illa – An open-source alternative to Retoolhttps://github.com/illacloud/illa-builderHey HNs:This is Vincent from the ILLA team. I'm sure you guys see tons of "Open-source" and "Alternative to Retool" these days. I won't deny Retool is a great product, and so are many open-source competitors such as Appsmith, Budibase, Tooljet etc. However, what makes ILLA so special? What advantages does ILLA have that allow users to choose ILLA instead of others?Well, I would like to answer those questions to all folks at HN one by one.First, we are similar to Retool, or Appsmith but we have many different our own features. We are a true open-source project all the folks here can check and review our Code here: https://github.com/illacloud/illa-builder. We believe as developers the basic ethic is to be honest, especially in "open-source" circumstances. You have to be honest with your team, users, and contributors in order to grow. Ask HN: Can someone explain these documentaries about USD or fiat money to me?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33600186There are a lot of documentaries (1) (2) on Youtube I'm seeing since 2020 which keep saying that our money (specifically USD) has become worthless ever since Nixon removed the gold standard in 1971. Is there any truth to it or is just clickbait spam?I would reckon it's the later since the claim sounds like a Flat earth claims, but recently I saw the same claim from a creator I really trust and follow for a long time and so I'm asking here as I see if anyone more knowledgeable can explain this.tldr:1. The fed reserve prints money and asks treasury to print IOU. People buy these IOU essentially giving loans to the US govt. The govt then pays these loans back by printing more money by creating more IOUs and so on and so forth.. so they are saying it's like a Ponzi scheme.2. Previously there had to be gold equivalent but since 1971 this was removed. Now all other currencies are based on USD, yet USD which was once based on gold isn't anymore..3. There are more points like these govt trying
