Ask HN: Revolut account frozen – this has to be illegal?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18974884Hi This is my first post (will post screenshots eventually)So I decide to move to revolut and start using them for some of my spending. After a few months I passed my 30k top up limit for the year. I then proceeded to send proof of income and all that sort of stuff onto them . Within a day my limit was lifted to 70k within 1 year .All was going well , I was telling all my mates to get the app as vs a normal bank, interacting and using revoult for daily spending was amazing ( especially the premium service ...which I paid for ) until some time in September/October . My account suddenly was frozen .I contacted support via in app chat and they asked for me to yet again prove my income . I happily obliged. So here is the bit that drives me up the wall and cannot be legal and if it is it shouldn't be . The live chat support turned around and told me that they were closing down my account as they did not like how I was spending my money. They then refused to go on a phone call or tell me any Jan 23, 2019 1:36 AM

Ask HN: Is there like an online version of Monty Python’s “Argument Clinic”https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18897934One of my new year resolutions is to meet and engage with more real life people. But it’s time consuming and can make me anxious. I was wondering about something like Monty Python’s Argument Clinic skit. But only online.1. Having too many people in an online forum is very distracting and is difficult to hold a discussion without constant digressions and feeling judged by audience.2. An app with a tinder like app where people state what they’d like to discuss and how much time they have along right/left swipe..would this work?3. Sometimes I want to discuss trade unions and sometimes I want to talk about a Burberry model and sometimes I want advice for the growing something at the farm. Sometimes I have 5 mts. Sometimes I have 30.If there isn’t an app for this already..how easy/tough would it be to come up with one?Would it make money ever or rather is it fundable? Is there anything similar?Jan 13, 2019 6:28 PM

Ask HN: Very Bad Situation at Work – Need Advicehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18640453Dear HackerNews community, at the moment I'm facing a very bad situation at work. As a little background, I was contacted by a recruiter from my current employer. Everything went well initially, but then it took more than a month to get the contract (first major red flag). I signed regardless, the alternative would have involved management of close to 25 people ehich I did not want. The first couple of weeks everything was fine, then I had the first situation where my boss didn't get a point out of my domain (not his). Then everything went south, he provoked me at evry opportunity, my work turned overnight into shit and it all culminated when he threated me with unspecified consequences should he ever have the impression that he couldn't trust me. A follow-up with his superior went nowhere, it was just a misunderstanding and I should self-reflect on my behaviour, I have to stay for the next year at my current team as well. I'm down on my nerves and my family is suffering. I could afforDec 9, 2018 11:56 AM

Ask HN: Anyone else feel people here are a bit too harsh on advertising?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18378158Or marketing in general?Because from what I've seen it, it seems like a decent chunk of Hacker News users think marketing is evil incarnate, some unethical manipulation tactic that's outright damaging to society. For example, in the comments here:https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18377296Or here:https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18334263But I'm not sure I agree with this. For one thing, not all (or to be honest, even most) marketing or advertising is necessarily dishonest, sometimes it's just mentioning what exists and showing how it works.Quite a lot of media trailers are that way really. Virtually every major Nintendo Switch game trailer is about as straight forward as you can get.I also think people forget exactly how much comes under advertising in general. A company's website is a marketing arm for them. The packaging of the product is. Obviously any trailers or presentations they hold (looks at Apple) are. Is that a bad thing? Not sure I'd say Apple having a flashier websitNov 4, 2018 9:29 PM

Ask HN: Browser print dialog programming or other wayshttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18165237First let me explain what i am talking about and why we need it.We are working with a world wide company for almost 20 years and a few of the countries are still using IE7 with our old version for some reason. The reason is to have ActiveX and use ScriptX to manipulate print dialog box on IE7.Client users are printing hundreds of invoices daily and each invoice or report uses different paper size and orientation, and users dont want to set print dialog settings each time they print. So, in that time, we implemented ScriptX for that purpose and everyone was happy. But in time, we updated our web application to work with all modern browsers and we moved to IE11 and ignored all prev. IE versions. After this point and with multi browser support, there is no more activex and vbscript involved. It means we can no longer use Active and ScriptX for this a few countries but they insist to have this printing functionality because time is very important for them. Now we are stuck and i cant offer anyOct 8, 2018 8:10 AM
