Ask HN: Stagnated Project Manager, Low Salary, 7 Years Inhttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35717147HN, I'm a project manager in 3rd highest COL area in the USA. I have been making $50K since 2018, same company of 150+ people for 3 years now. 7 years into this profession. I'm only here due to trade-specific knowledge that afforded me the opportunity, although I routinely see unqualified candidates get hired (All benefits of a doubt given, but after vetting candidates while working together vs. what they advertised on the resume to management, I've frequently been disappointed). I believe this company touts their long tenure in management layer to attract turn-and-burn project managers who typically last 2 years. I'm now managing about $700K+ in annual projects, upward of 20 store rebrands and 150+ service items at any given moment. High volume, low margin, brutal account. I am on call until 10PM to answer questions. My workload has tripled in the last three years, my managed projects annual revenue doubled. I went 3 years without a raise, finally got $2 an hour after I took on the ne

Show HN: Spinreactor.ai – The First AI-Designed News Bias Filterhttps://spinreactor.ai[The following post was generated by GPT-4 because it fit within the spirit of the project and I'm bad at copy]Hey HN community! I'm excited to share my latest project: SpinReactor.ai – a groundbreaking AI-designed and driven news bias filter that cuts through the noise and delivers spin-free, concise news articles.SpinReactor utilizes News API (https://newsapi.org/) to gather the latest headlines from multiple US sources. It then applies a dual layer similarity heuristic to group similar sources together. But that's just the beginning. With the help of GPT-4, SpinReactor breaks down the articles into core facts, strips away any editorializing, and synthesizes its own concise, unbiased article. It even open cites its sources for full transparency! To add some fun to the mix, we're using StableDiffusion, a text-to-image GAN, to generate article images. While they might not always capture the perfect mood, they sure make for some entertaining visuals. And guess what? The entire project, fr

Show HN: A ChatGPT TUI with custom botshttps://www.askmarvin.ai/guide/concepts/tui/Hi HN! We just shipped a full-featured TUI (Text User Interface) for chatting with your Marvin bots, powered by GPT 4 or GPT-3.5. Like all of Marvin, it's fully open-source and we hope you find it useful. To launch it, upgrade and run `marvin chat`.The TUI is built with Textual (https://github.com/textualize/textual/) and uses some of its newest features including background workers and modals. We've made base TUIs before but this is the first one that's a true "app" with many screens and coordinated global state. Happy to answer any questions about working with Textual - once it "clicked" it was surprisingly similar to building a traditional front end! Small note: Terminal.app on MacOS isn't great for TUIs, so while it'll work, we suggest an alternative terminal. One of our goals with the TUI was to integrate Marvin's bots into the familiar chat UX. Bots can have distinct personalities, instructions, and use plugins, so each one is like a mini "conversational application." You might kn

Show HN: Dabdab – Streaming Noteshttps://dabdab.org/Hi! I'd like to present a project I've been working on lately to make an app to record thought process the way it fits me.I think current note taking solutions are a poor fit for the cases where you just want do dump your thoughts on a topic quickly or where time when a note has been taken actually matters or in cases like science where you want to keep a log of actions to be able to troubleshoot or reproduce your experimentI've built my own thing - dabdab.org. You can think of it as a baby of twitter and google keep of sorts but without all social features of twitter. The base concept is a stream of messages, streams can be nested and have additional fields defined, you can make things public if you want to, but it's decided per stream and you can even share by link. It's useful for all kinds of observations and data recording. I've been using it for the last two months and it works great for me.For example I have streams to store quotes from books with my comments on them, do a quick

Ask HN: Time to Leave the US?https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35364718It feels like the US has passed a tipping point of sorts and is rapidly moving the wrong way on a lot of important issues.Biggest / most glaring being the out-of-control gun violence, esp. in our schools. That's simply unacceptable to me as a parent of two toddlers under the age of 2.Medical / Cost of a significant illness is really Fd up in this country. I had a kidney stone last year, and it cost me over 5k. Most of my friends / family would not have been able to absorb that surprise expense and would have had to use credit cards. That's not even much cash compared to what medical bills in the US can easily cost you. Families are being financially ruined by this shit.Lastly would be random, non-school violence. My wife is Asian and the increase in random asshats assaulting smaller, weaker people – esp Asian women – is just the latest WTF is going on in this country. When I step back, it seems inevitable that someone close to me will suffer from one of the 3, or possible more than 1 of

Launch HN: Flower (YC W23) – Train AI models on distributed or sensitive datahttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35260815Hey HN - we're Daniel, Taner, and Nic, and we're building Flower (https://flower.dev/), an open-source framework for training AI on distributed data. We move the model to the data instead of moving the data to the model. This enables regulatory compliance (e.g. HIPAA) and ML use cases that are otherwise impossible. Our GitHub is at https://github.com/adap/flower, and we have a tutorial here: https://flower.dev/docs/tutorial/Flower-0-What-is-FL.html.Flower lets you train ML models on data that is distributed across many user devices or “silos” (separate data sources) without having to move the data. This approach is called federated learning.A silo can be anything from a single user device to the data of an entire organization. For example, your smartphone keyboard suggestions and auto-corrections can be driven by a personalized ML model learned from your own private keyboard data, as well as data from other smartphone users, without the data being transferred from anyone’s device. Most

Show HN: Learn Languages When Watching Videos with Easehttps://intersub.ccI'd like to tell you about InterSub, a tool that I've been developing out of my pain of learning languages.I found watching videos the best working option for me because it allows me to advance in language almost without spending extra time. I watch videos - series, TV shows, documentaries etc. not less an hour a day and switching on watching in the learned language gave me an extra hour of practice. I wasn't satisfied with solutions which I'd found on the market, and I decided to make a better one. With InterSub, one can watch videos on your favorite platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Coursera and so on (soon), get instant translations of any unknown words or phrases in subtitles altogether with their context, have them automatically saved in a personal vocabulary and learn later in a fav mobile app. We designed InterSub to save one's time and energy, so a user can focus on mastering the language. We'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback on how we can make the tool even better.

Could or should they have known this was coming? I don’t want to blame the victims, but might some of us be in the same place as they were a few months ago - blissfully unaware of how much our money is at risk? What could they have done? What can we do now?
