Show HN: I built the NAS drive comparison table I couldn't findFor the past few years I've been building a huge NAS storage with over 1PB in size. As its growing over time, buying new drives is always a tedious process. It's hard to tell whether a drive is CMR or not. Some manufacturers are known for sneaking in SMR into their NAS line of disks. There's always multiple browser tabs open and very often they are in total disagreement. So, first I built a table, which turned into this website. It fetches daily prices for all NAS disks from Amazon, and covers 8 different regions. It has price history, shows if a disk is a CMR or SMR, and its failure rates (I had to compile tons of raw data from Backblaze public Drive Stats). It has both NAS hard drives and SSD, and you can see price per terabyte for each drive listed. It is free and it needs no login. I worked hard to keep the data honest, so only new drives are listed and all scalpers and grey market was removed. The whole dataset is also available for free under CC BY 4.0 license on the Data page (Back
Show HN: PostgreSQL backup tool Databasus moved to PG 17 native physical backupsAn earlier version of Databasus shipped a backup agent: a binary that ran on the database host to stream WAL and create physical backups locally. That first implementation turned out to be a mistake, and we removed it. Physical backups now run remotely from the Databasus host, as described above. Why the agent was the wrong approach:• It was a naive implementation that only copied WAL on top of full backups, which led to a long RTO• Users had to configure both Databasus and a separate agent, when doing everything remotely from one place is far simpler• Because the agent lived outside the main system, it was hard to cover every test case• There is really only one problem an agent solves: reaching a database that is not accessible from outside. For 99% of users that is already handled by running Databasus inside the private network or connecting over SSH, so the agent was reinventing the wheel and making a simple problem far more complicated than it needed to be• It could not run on manag

Ask HN: Help with GlioblastomaBack in December 2023 a family member was diagnosed with grade 4 glioblastoma. The median life expectancy from diagnosis is 12 months. Two weeks after the diagnosis he had surgery which was successful in removing the tumour without a huge amount of cognitive impairment. The then had the standard radio and chemo therapy for six months. In July of this year he had another scan which showed two more tumours, which were also surgically removed successfully. In between the two surgeries we found a treatment called DCVax from Northwest Biotherapeutics that had good clinical evidence, but not enough tumour material was recovered from the surgery in able to move forward with this treatment. We're now looking at other treatment options for this in addition to what his oncologist is recommending which is Avastin. The whole experimental medicine field in terms of glioblastoma treatment seems to be a bit a minefield full of snake-oil salesman so I wanted to ask everyone here if they have any personal k
