Ask HN: How do infrastructure providers calculate cost to compute? From the outside of the hosting business, but with a less-than-shallow understanding of computer and networking history, I am befuddled at hosting costs (cheap as they may be even for how they’ve been historically). Is there a way to find the actual cost to compute a given task in terms of electricity consumption, or has this been a solved problem and hosting companies just add their proprietary sauce and then charge for the end result?I’m curious in this way, because I’d love to be able to host for clients in my geographical area, but I don’t want to over-charge more than what it is actually worth to run the infrastructure. At the core of my question is understanding the basic economics of hosting in relation to electrical consumption and hardware wear. I’d guess the outer layer of my question has a bit to do with knowing the true cost of hosting rather than how to make the most off of clients for simple services.Appreciate any and all input!

How are these people in Reddit getting textbooks for free?So I did a sting operation in reddit. Just google "textbook piracy reddit" and see all the subreddits where people are requesting ebooks.I used to think they download from libgen and sell here for cheap. So I created a fake request and tried to trap some. Turns out THEY HAD THE BOOK THAT I ASKED FOR.Even more surprising thing was the book I was asking them was indian books.1) Even if their university had access to ebooks, having indian ebooks is the least likely thing. (Indian I mean written by Indians not in hindi, related to engineering and cs).2) I then tried IRC chats, to check if the book they got was from there. NOPE.3) It wasn't ofc from libgen/b-ookzz or whatever it is.4) Not from google search obviously.https://www.amazon.com/System-Simulation-D-S-Hira-ebook/dp/B00QUYL022https://www.kopykitab.com/System-Simulation-Modelling-And-Languages-by-R-Panneerselvam-P-Senthilkumarthey had these 2 ebooks but not this onehttps://www.amazon.in/Modeling-Simulation-Electrical-Engineering-Ele

Digikey manipulated me to get them and FedEx out of trouble* A rant post, but that's the only option I've got left TL;DR - FedEx charged me for fees that they shouldn't have, Digikey told me that if and after I'll pay they will resolve it but ditched me right afterFedEx: It all started as a regular order from Digikey, International shipping, small package, low price ($74~, $29 shipping) The price is set this way for a reason - this is the limit that is a tax free package locally. The package arrived to the country , and call me to ask for another payment, $62~ for a $74 package. They said that they labeled it as a commercial package, and that's why only $20 if for tax and the other is for FedEx (which is outraging by itself, to electrically fill a form that is already half automated, there is no law restricting them or enable competition)I told them they made a mistake, declaring it as a commercial import, which is definitely not, they told me some bushtit about if its more then 3 items its commercial (which is not true, and there is a component

Launch HN: Vimmerse (YC W22) – Platform and SDKs to create and play 3D videoHello HN! We are Jill and Basel, founders of Vimmerse (https://vimmerse.net) Vimmerse is a platform and SDKs for creating and playing 3D video. We make it easy for businesses, developers, and creators to provide 3D immersive experiences for their viewers using our content creation APIs and player SDKs.We have been watching video in two dimensions for too long! Most 3D content people experience today is computer generated, such as VR games. Diverse use cases can benefit from real-world 3D video, such as music performances, training, family memories, and the metaverse. Why isn’t there more real-world 3D video? Because it has been difficult and expensive to create, stream, and playback real-world, camera-captured 3D video content.I am an IEEE Fellow and inventor of over 200 patents. Basel has a PhD in electrical engineering with deep experience in VR/AR/3D video. While at Intel (as Chief Media Architect and Intel Fellow), I led an MPEG standards workgroup on 360/VR video. I found that 360

Front-end is a mess, now what can we do? How do you do in large IT companies?A little background on me, I work as an intermediate front-end developer in Yellow Pages. I like my job and I want to improve myself constantly. I have a bachelor, and master in electrical engineering, however, I found job market with my academic background not much promising, so I started and developed my career in web development. With this background you, I started learning, working since three years ago; basically anything from online tutorials to blogs, and sometimes reference books. BUT everything is changing at very very fast pace e.g in the past three years JavaScript has gone into 5, 6, 7, etc. AngularJS has come from version 1 to 5.and I am getting really tired of following up. Sometimes, when I look back, I ask myself why? Why I selected front-end? why? Well, it looked easy at the beginning. Even a high school kid can start it.I like to know about you guys, so-called hackers community. How do you deal with these changes? At some point, I want to say, I know everything on fron

Ask HN: Software- Better to focus on or complement with? From your experience, what advantages/disadvantages are there to: 1) Majoring in electrical engineering and physics, minoring in software development 2) Majoring in software engineering, minoring in electrically engineering and physicsContext: I'm a first year engineering student and would like to pick either Software Engineering (electrical engineering with computer science) or Engineering Physics (electrical engineering with physics). I already have a couple years experience programming, really enjoy it, and is why I went into the program. But, I've also really enjoyed physics and math classes and they've given me a strong desire to learn more about physics. Intuitively, I think that having a strong physics background opens the door to more problems I could solve with software. However, I don't want to to discount the value of studying software engineering. I don't have the experience to see what kind of walls and limitations each choice offers. What have you seen?
